The Silk Road: Then and Now  Photographs by Lynn Gilbert

June 18 – July 9, 2011

Cappadocia Art and History Museum will host a photographic exhibition, The Silk Road: Then and Now featuring the work of Lynn Gilbert, who has explored the Silk Road, and highlighting her recent work in Turkey, Uzbekistan and Syria.

Through her revealing portrayals of private spaces usually never seen by the public, Gilbert captures the style of people of means, as well as those who must rely only on great imagination to create environments of stunning beauty and grace. Her striking images also depict a world of commerce almost untouched by technology.

Her lifelong passion for visiting homes around the world has enabled Gilbert to appreciate that the Turkish people’s unique sense of design is an intrinsic characteristic of their lives:

“Stepping through a door, or even in a workplace, I never ceased to be amazed by some expression of beauty. Using the power of natural light I hope to share with the viewer my initial moment of utter joy.”

“I was moved by the beauty and mystery of Lynn Gilbert’s photography and her ability to make the viewer feel that they are there.”  Museum director Sibel Radiye Gül.

Lynn Gilbert is a widely published photographer based in New York City. Her mid-1970s collection, “Children in Repose,” portrays the unique individuality of children from more than 100 New York families of differing socio-economic backgrounds. Her book, “Particular Passions: Talks with Women who Shaped our Times,” has been called, “One of those rare rare books that pick your life up and point it in the right direction.”
